Hear the call – Elk herds in Great Smoky National Park

Near the Oconoluftee Visitor Center on the outskirts of Cherokee, North Carolina inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park exist a magnificent herd of elk.

Transplanted elk began inhabiting the valleys and mountains early in the 1900’s. These early attempts were unsuccessful. IMG_0194.JPG

With later success of Maintoban elk being reintroduced in Kentucky in 1997, another effort was undertaken in the Catalaloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

With each passing year, and all the conservation efforts the herd continues to grow.
