Searching for the Right One? Hoshi Chao V1.0 – Purchasing

Ever thought about traveling as a way of life? Not waiting until retirement, but as soon as possible, heading out to new and exciting places!! Changing the seasons by moving around the country? Seeing more of this great land and the entire world we live while we still are able and full of energy.

How would you want to travel?  Do you fly and hotel it everywhere?  What about taking your own custom home with you?  To feel the freedom of travel and adventureand still have the comforts of home!!

Life always brings changes to everyone.  As our children reached the point of stepping out onto their own, my adventurer and I decided to move forward with our dreams of traveling these great United States.  To do this in style, we began looking for a fifth wheel that we could renovate and make our own little nest.  This is the start of our story taking you through that journey.  If you have considered doing something similar, I encourage you to step out on faith and keep moving forward to reach your dreams.  We are very glad we did!

The name Hoshi Chao is taken from traditional Chinese language interpreted to mean “Stars Nest.” This is where we, our family and our friends will rest during our adventures.  This is an exciting restoration changing this 1986 Layton fifth wheel into our Hoshi Chao!

Be patient as you scroll through these pictures. These photos are showing another families items throughout the interior of the fifth wheel before we purchased her and made her our own. Please pardon the quality of the photos in this first article, as it was on an older phone camera and we were a little excited. They are generally fuzzy and poor.  All following photos in ucoming versions of the story are far superior. Enjoy…

The kitchen looked to really have the potential of a lot of space. From past experience though, while benches provided some storage and potentially a small kids bed, we never enjoyed sitting in them and never used the beds.

Knowing we wanted to have a more decorative kitchen, we began picturing the wallpaper and fabric curtains coming down allowing more light and wall surfaces. We greatly appreciated all the windows in this fifth-wheel. Let the sun shine in!

Loved the look of the stove as it was very vintage, and in general the microwave area. Both may need to  be updated to more modern appliances, we will see.

The original refrigerator had a good amount of storage space, especially for larger containers. The amount of room in the separate freezer compartment was great!  The picture below is terrible, but the only one we have from that moment to see what the potential of the family room area from the kitchen, sorry.

There is built-in cabinetry in place for a very outdated television and whatever.  All in all it was decent space inside, it just felt dated. Note: This area is where the newer fifth-wheels and travel trailers will have a slide-out or two.  This being our initial go at traveling in this style, we looked for a simpler style wthout slides. Not to mention we were looking to keep the weight of the trailer lower so we could pull it with a smaller sized truck, slides will start to add substantial weight. Also, older model trailers with slides tend to experience water issues and maintenance issues with the motors for the slides.  So, for us at this time, no slides.

A look back into the kitchen from the bathroom entrance, all in it was cluttered but we felt mostly from the other peoples items and built-ins that are not needed.  It could provide decent space.

Jennifer and I loved the cabinet space! This is a real plus for us. On our long trips we can have a fully stocked kitchen, and bring all of our clothes if we wanted.  Our trips mostly involve family and that means kids and grandkids.  With more people, you can never can have enough storage!

The bathroom was in need of a color change, very dated, but the layout functioned well and we did not feel cramped.  On one side of the bathroom (not pictured) was a full wall of small, medium and large closet storage area.  Nice!! Easy to access, even if you were using the facilities. Would you like to use the facilities, Mr. Bob?

The bedroom area included a large closet space, and a spacious queen sized bed with easy access around both sides.  Bed sizes are something you need to pay attention when shopping, many are full mattresses.  Not a big deal unless you are a little taller like me and prefer to not have your feet lop off the end!

Again more light from both sides of the bedroom area, makes it feel so spacious and enviting.

Love the overhead storage cabinets above the bed!

Notice the nice mirror installed below the cabinets, again it makes the room feel larger and when entering provides a nice dynamic.  Never had a mirror around the bed before, not certain I want to see myself at various times, but we’ll see…

The right side window with more natural light, oh yes baby!!

The decision was made to purchase this one, we had looked at several before this article.  A friend of ours helped haul her home, as we did not have a truck to pull it yet.   Not certain if that is putting the cart before the horse, but it is the way it was done.

We decided to travel behind her because we were so excited!!! Not only  to take pictures, but just to keep seeing how she looked on the road.  The whole trip home we excitedly talked about where we NOW wanted to journey and seek our adventures!

Beautiful, just beautiful! We saw lots of hard work, but definitely potential. She was coming home!
