Africa Can Be Hot (Spicy) ~ EPCOT F&W Festival Review

There are many items that can factor into an enjoyable meal at EPCOT’s Food & Wine Festival.  This year as we enjoyed our 2016 World Showcase tour, we found ourselves so excited as the smells were enticing you right from the entrance.  Having already stopped for a taste at other countries, we were now choosing with more patience. Patience because even though we would love to eat from every country, it just isn’t going to happen.  Then we passed the African booth.  The incredible smells of the Berbere-style Beef Tenderloin Tips with Onions, Jalapenos, Tomato and Pap called out to me.

The Africa booth sits on the corner adjacent to the Outpost shops and along the World Showcase Lagoon. I should start by saying that  I have always been fond of spicy foods.  Even more so in recent years as my taste buds were treated to Thai, Korean and Indian foods.  Spices that are not designed to heat up like a torch, but rather to make the foods taste much better without burning your mouth.  Not certain if I said that right, but you get the point, right?

Now since the beef tenderloin tips were served with onions, jalapenos, and tomoato over a bed of Pap, you would think I would be expecting spicy.  From the moment you take this meal into your hands, you cannot wait to eat!   Pap (porridge) or mieliepap (Afrikaans) added a soft texture and contrast to the other ingredients.

The difficulty we had with this meal, was that after a few bites, the spices took over.  To the point that we could not tell the difference between the various items in the dish. What started out as amazing, became something that drove us to find our next drink (not really a bad thing when you think of it that way)!

This is a meal that on the right day, with a drink in hand, would be just what the doctor ordered.  Unfortunately for me, on this day at the time we chose, it was just too spicy.  If you love spicy foods, then I really recommend you give it a try.  There are some wonderful flavors.  The looks and smells are out of this world!
